Five active Japanese Butoh artists sat down and spoke openly — for 90 minutes, with nothing held back — about the things their art world almost never says out loud in public: money, debt, public grants, working abroad, succession, and the apprentice system. They set aside decades of factional division and methodological dispute to share one thing: the reality of making a living through Butoh.

Butoh was born in Japan, yet today it is carried on most fiercely outside of it — while in its own birthplace it is quietly becoming a “lost culture.” This round table asks, without flinching, how an art form survives inside the gravity of society. It is the first dialogue of its kind in Japan, preserved here as a complete bilingual record.
