Paris-based butoh artist Juju Alishina returns to Tokyo to give workshops and a performance — her first butoh workshops in Japan in about twelve years. One of the few artists of her kind active on the world stage, she offers a rare chance to experience expression of international caliber. Please take this opportunity to encounter butoh at the highest level.

Juju ALISHINA

Butoh dancer. Born in Kobe; based in Paris. From 1982 she studied butoh with the Kyoto butoh company Byakko-sha, and in 1990 she founded the dance company Nuba (射干/NUBA) in Tokyo. Drawing on a background in theatre and Japanese classical dance, she developed a distinctive, genre-crossing physical language and choreographic technique, performing and creating across Japan, Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. In 1998 she relocated to France, centering her performance work and butoh education in Paris. Her books — Paris発・踊れる身体, Le Corps Prêt à Danser, and Butoh Dance Training — were published in Tokyo, Paris, and London and are widely read as practical guides to butoh and body training. She has given several thousand classes, workshops, and performances, and continues to devote herself to the creation and teaching of butoh. This marks her first butoh workshop in Japan in twelve years.

The programs on September 25 and 27 will be different.

Professional dancers, directors, butoh researchers, and dance-school directors from the United States, Asia, Europe, and beyond travel to Paris to study the Juju Alishina method. Take this chance to experience her teaching directly.

Content includes: the foundations of butoh, ki (energy) work, sharpening the five senses, linking voice and movement, frameworks, standing zen ( ritsuzen), moving zen ( dōzen), techniques for widening one's improvisational range, and more.

Butoh Talk Show

From age 19 to 63, Juju Alishina has observed and lived butoh's transformations from both the inside and the outside — and here she shares what she has come to see.

Topics include: the current state of butoh and contemporary dance in France; memories of the butoh legends; life as a full-time working butoh artist; caring for the body in order to keep dancing for a lifetime; women's life planning; where butoh is heading; whether one can dance butoh without being Japanese; reflections from an arts festival in Akita; behind-the-scenes stories from the documentary film Juju Alishina – La femme butô; publishing books on butoh; and more.

The material is engaging and useful even for those who don't dance — and entirely of the present moment. A time for exchange with the audience follows the talk.

Improvised Performance

This is drawn from the work Juju Alishina has developed through "SOKKYO," an improvisation event she has hosted in Paris.

On the day, she improvises on the spot from themes offered by the audience — a one-time-only performance, born in an intimate space, on that day and in that moment alone.

An after-talk and a time for exchange with the audience follow the performance.
